Melatonin is a hormone that promotes restful sleep. Its principal function is to control our day and night biological rhythms. Our bodies release more melatonin in darkness to prepare for sleep. Melatonin production is turned off in response to daylight. Supplementation at night before bed can improve sleep quality, sleep onset, and total sleep time.
Melatonin is comparable to sleep drugs for improving sleep but without the grogginess often experienced from pharmaceutical sleep aids. It has the noteworthy advantage of improving cognitive performance and reducing memory impairment upon wakening.
Melatonin QSR is specially formulated to release melatonin slowly during the course of the night. Most melatonin supplements are rapidly metabolized by the liver, increasing the risk of wakening in the middle of the night and difficulty getting back to sleep. Serum melatonin half-life is estimated to be 30 to 60 minutes, and first-pass metabolism in the liver results in a clearance rate of 90 percent. This formulation overcomes this by releasing 1 mg of melatonin immediately upon digestion with the rest of the melatonin (4 mg) being released over a 6-hour period.
Who Is At Risk of Low Melatonin?
Various factors may cause melatonin levels to drop:
Aging: Melatonin production drops off precipitously with aging. This may be one reason older adults suffer from cognitive decline.
Poor Diet: Low quality diets deplete the raw materials the body needs to produce melatonin.
Incorrect Light Exposure: Light exposure at the wrong times impairs melatonin release. Blue light at night from computer and phone screens inhibits melatonin. Insufficient exposure to natural light during the day can impair melatonin release.
Drug Therapies: Medications can impair melatonin release. NSIADs like ibuprofen decrease melatonin, whereas other drugs such as antidepressants and antibiotics may lead to elevated melatonin levels.
Chronic Stress: Melatonin release is intimately related to other hormones including the stress hormone cortisol. High cortisol levels impair the body’s ability to metabolize and release melatonin.
Health Benefits of Melatonin
Melatonin has important antioxidant activity and has been shown to have many positive health effects:
Overcome Jet Lag*: Melatonin can help reset your biorhythm in response to a change in time zones.
Promote Sleep In Shift Workers*: Melatonin helps shift workers adapt to needing to sleep at odd times.
Inhibit Inflammation*: Melatonin is a powerful scavenger of free radicals during sleep, countering inflammation and lowering disease risk.
Support Brain Health*: Melatonin appears to have a powerful antioxidant effect in the brain, countering oxidative stress to protect brain neurons and support cognitive function. It may protect against Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.
Support Immunity*: Melatonin supports immune cell production. Supplementation has been shown to reduce risk of testing positive for covid-19.
Slow Aging*: Melatonin helps preserve bone mass—a major predictor of longevity. It also reduces oxidative stress that leads to cellular aging.
Cancer Protection*: Melatonin directly inhibits cancer cell growth and reduces risk of death from cancer.
Support Cardiovascular Health*: Melatonin improves lipid markers and lowers blood pressure for better heart function.
