CoQ10 Px is a purified form of CoQ10 made through fermentation from natural yeast. CoQ10 is synthesized in the body from the amino acid tyrosine with the help of vitamin B6. Also known as ubiquinone from the word “ubiquitous” because it is in every cell in the body, CoQ10 is protective for heart function and energy production. The cells that make up the heart muscle have a very high metabolism and need CoQ10 as an energy-producing cofactor.
As important as CoQ10 is, it can easily be depleted:
Poor nutrition can put you at risk of low CoQ10 levels. Vitamin deficiencies, especially lack of vitamin B6, can impair CoQ10 production.
Aging increases risk of low CoQ10. CoQ10 levels naturally decline with age and may be one reason for the declining physical function associated with aging.
Many drug therapies inhibit CoQ10 production. Statins and beta blockers deplete CoQ10. They also reduce the building block nutrients necessary for the body to synthesize CoQ10.
Chronic illness depletes CoQ10 and increases nutrient demands in tissues.
Genetic defects impair synthesis of CoQ10.
Depletion of CoQ10 is a vicious spiral. When a cell lacks CoQ10, it is unable to produce enough energy and experiences increased inflammation. This increased oxidative load further depletes CoQ10, and damages cells, furthering disease of the heart and other organs.
Benefits of CoQ10
The primary role of CoQ10 is as a critical intermediate in the electron transport chain of the mitochondria, allowing for optimal energy production and antioxidant action.
Clinical trials show the following effects of CoQ10:
Supports Cardiovascular Health*: The heart muscle has a high energy demand and CoQ10 helps meet this need by increasing energy production. Supplementation is especially important for heart failure patients and those taking statins and beta blockers. Cholesterol-lowering drugs inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase that is required for CoQ10 synthesis. Depletion in CoQ10 may account for the statin-induced muscle pain observed in some patients.
Improves Fat Oxidation*: CoQ10 moves electrons through the electron transport chain of the Krebs cycle, playing a role in fat burning.
Counters Type II Diabetes*: CoQ10 helps maintain insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance to reduce diabetes symptoms.
Protects Against Cancer*: Due to antioxidant action, CoQ10 may be protective against cancer. Low levels of CoQ10 have been linked to increased cancer risk and poor prognosis in skin and breast cancer.
Improves Pulmonary Function in People Suffering From Lung Disease*: CoQ10's antioxidant action may reduce inflammation in the lungs that occurs with COPD and other lung diseases.
Reduces Progression of Brain Diseases*: CoQ10 protects the brain, lowering oxidative stress that harms brain neurons and leads to degeneration. Studies show benefits for Parkinson’s patients.
Reduces Fatigue & Pain*: CoQ10 has been shown to help people with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and related muscular disorders who often have a low quality of life, significant pain, and poor exercise tolerance.
Supports Exercise Performance*: Exercise is an energy-dense activity that requires significant antioxidant capacity. Studies suggest CoQ10 supplementation can improve muscle strength, cardiac function, and oxygen use during exercise.
Counters Depression*: By lowering inflammation in the brain and improving energy levels, neurotransmitter levels may stabilize and mood may improve from CoQ10 supplementation.
