Calcium D-Glucarate is the supplemental, calcium salt form of D-glucaric acid—a substance produced naturally in the body and obtained from fruits and vegetables. Supplementation of calcium D-glucarate supports the liver in its role as a detoxifier.

Calcium-D-glucarate also has antioxidant effects and anti-cancer effects. It helps regulate estrogen metabolism and serves as a lipid-lowering agent, making it useful for improving cholesterol values. Calcium D-glucarate  has been studied extensively by MD Anderson Cancer Center where it has been shown to support normal cell replication and apoptosis. Apoptosis is the normal death of cells to help rid the body of cells that have been damaged beyond repair. How Detoxification Works
Detoxification occurs when the body eliminates compounds including toxins and waste products from the body. It requires three phases. Calcium d-glucarate helps with the second phase, which is known as glucuronidation and occurs in the liver.

During glucuronidation, a compound called glucuronic acid attaches to toxins to create a substance that is safely eliminated by the body. In the case of liver detoxification, the substrates are often xenobiotic substances—chemicals that are foreign to the body, such as pharmaceutical drugs and environmental pollutants.  The liver also removes compounds that are produced inside the body through natural biochemical processes, including excess hormones, bile acids, and more. Once bound to glucuronic acid, toxins and hormones are ready to be safely eliminated through the GI tract.

Some bacterial species that live in the large intestine secrete an enzyme called glucuronidase that is capable of breaking apart glucuronidated molecules, halting detoxification in its tracks. This results in the harmful substances being reabsorbed into the body, rather than being eliminated. Calcium D-glucarate stops this action and lowers the chance that toxins will re-enter circulation and cause harm to cells.
