Collagen Care Chocolate nourishes the body’s connective tissue by providing the building blocks for healthy joints, hair, and skin. Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue, making up 80 percent of skin and 25 to 35 percent of the whole body protein content in humans. It acts as a scaffold in tissue regeneration that allows the body to deposit cells to build new tissue. Collagen has an unusual amino acid composition containing large amounts of glycine and proline, which are consumed in relatively low quantities in the average diet.

Collagen can be rigid (bone), compliant (tendon), or have a gradient from rigid to compliant (cartilage). Collagen is also present in blood vessels, teeth, eyes, the gut, the spinal discs, and muscle tissue.

What Makes This Product Different?
Collagen Care Chocolate provides a delicious hydrolyzed collagen, which improves absorption and digestion. As it occurs in connective tissue, collagen is a very large molecule. Hydrolyzing it provides smaller peptides that can easily pass through the intestinal barrier and enter the blood stream to build new tissue. Studies suggest that more than 90 percent of hydrolyzed collagen is digested and available as small peptides in the blood stream within one hour.

Factors That Increase Loss of Collagen
Stress leads to high cortisol that stimulates breakdown of collagen in joints, skin, and hair.

Sunlight, smoking, and pollution degrade collagen in skin leading to wrinkles and aging.

Lack of vitamin C leads to collagen breakdown and scurvy—a condition in which defective collagen prevents the formation of strong connective tissue.

Bacteria and viruses secrete enzymes that destroy collagen and interfere with production.

An enzyme called collagenase is constantly produced by the body and it eats away at natural collagen.

Aging is associated with a major loss of collagen. Humans lose about one percent of collagen content each year after age 40. This decline equates to a loss of 7 percent of skin thickness every 10 years. Skin hydration and hair quality also decline.

Benefits of Collagen
Collagen has many uses in treating complications of bone, skin, joints, and connective tissue. It also has metabolic effects, impacting insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.  Clinical trials have shown the following effects:

Supports Skin*: Collagen gives skin its biochemical properties and protects from external trauma. Supplementation improves skin elasticity and hydration.

Reduces Joint Pain*: Collagen strengthens connective tissue that surrounds the joints and allows them to function optimally. It can help both older adults and youngsters: One study of college athletes found that supplementing with 10 grams of collagen led to decreased pain in the knee joint when running and pivoting.

Improves Physical Activity In Arthritis*: Joint pain is a major obstacle to physical activity in the elderly. By improving joint health, may allow people to be more active due to less joint discomfort.

Improves Bone Strength*: Collagen comprises the majority of bone and makes bone flexible and able to withstand impact. Supplementation has been shown to strengthen bone mineral density in older women at risk of osteoporosis.

Improves Muscle Mass*: Collagen can improve training outcomes for athletes and the elderly. As joint integrity improves, you can exert more force when training, thereby stimulating muscle growth and strength. One study of young men showed that supplementation in conjunction with a training program increased lean mass by 2 kg compared to a placebo.

Supports Cardiovascular Health*: Collagen is an important component of blood vessels and loss of collagen is a hallmark of high blood pressure as arteries become less flexible and heart attack risk increases. Supplementing collagen may counteract this, with several studies showing that collagen reduces inflammation affecting the cardiovascular system.

Strengthens Hair & Nails*: Collagen provides the building blocks for healthy hair and nails. One study found that supplementation improved nail health by 42 percent.

Supports Metabolic Health*: Collagen has anti-obesity effects, impairing fat storage and improving blood sugar tolerance. It also counters inflammatory markers that impair insulin sensitivity.
